Tips from the team: Frank - Mr Bao - 包先生 | Taiwanese restaurant ...

Who are your favourite neighbours?

Our postman is a lovely chap called John (he’s not technically a neighbour but we see him everyday so feel like he is).

Then there's Alan and the guys at Tadberry Evedale, the printers round the back of Mr Bao where we get all of our menus and things printed.

Alan’s another Peckham old timer who's always up for a chat and eager to help out – he even lent us his store room when we were opening.

Where To Eat And Drink In... Peckham | Londonist

Petitou remains a popular and pretty spot in the Bellenden area, famous for its no-nonsense breakfasts and large plates of fluffy scrambled eggs.

From one station to another — there's a branch of Blackbird Bakery to be found near Queen's Road Peckham with the usual coffee and cakes.

Tucked away off the main road is Yada's Kurdish restaurant, a charming, ramshackle space serving Kurdish delicacies, such as kubba (crispy, meat filled rice cases), kebabs and pickles.

Over the road is local Italian Artusi, with its emphasis on fresh pasta and quality ingredient sourcing — a modern contrast to the much loved but more homely style of Il Giardino down by the station — a charming, family-run spot which locals adore because it's a little like sitting in someone's living room.

The Hope is proving popular, packed with drinkers supping craft beers and hoovering toasted sandwiches, while The White Horse has been serving Peckham since the 1800s and is now run by the same people who run The Montpellier.

Hamming it up: London's best restaurants for jamon | London ...

In Bermondsey, chef Jose Pizarro has already sold 485 jamons across his two restaurants — selling one a day at Jose — while at Iberica London, 500 full jamons are now purchased annually.

More meaty treats Then last week Spaniard Blanca Rowe opened a tiny restaurant in Peckham called Miss Tapas, an extension of her wholesale iberico jamon business.

Intrigued, she happily agrees but as someone who specialises in selling luxury iberico hams — she supplies to the double-Michelin-starred restaurant Sketch — it’s an unusual experience.

Five best jamons in London Jose At Jose Pizarro’s restaurant, Iberico ham is rich and delicate, with beautiful, glistening fat and caramel flavours that slide around the mouth.

It’s probably the growing number of such places – part of this corner of Peckham’s swing towards gentrification – that prompted the Victoria to go for a refurb.

The restaurant has also had a freshen-up, with a new head chef and a menu that has a touch more flair than your average gastropub, drawing ingredients from local suppliers and listing dishes such as miso-glazed rabbit (and that’s just for starters) and baked Devon crab with scrumpy-fried oysters and fennel mayonnaise.

Highly rated modern Italian restaurant Artusi is on the same road and, round the corner, Bar Story, under Peckham Rye Station, has cocktails, pizzas and dancing.

• Accommodation was provided by The Victoria Inn (doubles from £90 a night B&B, 020-7639 5052, victoriainnpeckham.com) • Shop Eclectic homewares and gift shop Quaint & Belle on the ever popular Bellenden Road is well-stocked with beautiful jewellery and home and garden accessories, much of which is by local designers.

• Do The Peckham Plex on Rye Lane is a truly independent cinema that shows blockbusters but also work from local film-makers.

Miss Tapas | Restaurants in Peckham Rye, London

A stylish and welcoming tapas bar that mixes authentic Andalusian dishes and an interesting wine and sherry selection.

This convivial tapas bar in Peckham Rye is not just a natural sideline to the Spanish-food import business run by its owners but a labour of love.

Its look mixes the style defaults of a smart Spanish tapas bar with a modern London restaurant – so cast-iron stools, reclaimed barrels serving as tables and faded photos of old Seville are set against a background of bare brickwork and exposed bulbs.

Dishes mostly tread tried-and-tested tapas territory, with only the odd flight of fancy thrown in.

Peckhamites can add another solid local restaurant to their ever-lengthening hit-list.
